Trip Report: Coleman Deming Route, Mount Baker
Mount Baker has been a peak that I have been interested in since I was a little kiddo. On a clear summer or fall (or winter) day you can see it pretty well from Victoria.
As you drive closer to the peak (after crossing the border if you’re coming from Canada) it becomes clear as to why it tends to stick out. Mount Baker totally dominates the skyline as you drive East, as you approach it!
To be honest, I was pretty anxious about climbing it. I was thinking to myself, “How the hell am I going to go up there in just 12 hours of climbing?!” There’s a fair amount of glacier travel too. In the end though, it was actually a pretty casual snow log. Ryan and I started from our high camp at 2:30AM which helped the snow be as hard as it could. We were on top for sunrise and back down at our higher camp by 9:30AM. I was thanking my lucky stars that we weren’t back any later as the sun was just COOKING us by 9AM.
I’m super stoked to have bagged this peak!! It represents one of my first BIG peaks. Big shout out to Ryan for being such a great climbing partner! Thanks bud.
